Bill proposed to keep invasive species from Great Lakes

A proposed federal law would broaden the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's powers to regulate nonnative species and keep them from being imported or sold in the United States.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Representative Elise Stefanik, a North Country Republican, on Friday announced the reintroduction of the Invasive Fish and Wildlife Prevention Act.
The federal agency already has authority to regulate more than 200 nonnative species designated as "injurious wildlife," but the legislation would allow it to address potentially invasive species before they get into the U.S. based on a scientific risk analysis, according to Gillibrand.
“Whether it’s Asian carp in our lakes or the emerald ash borer in our forests, invasive species threaten our environment and our economy, and we have to do everything we can to block them from coming into our state,” Gillibrand said.
