This photo illustrates how the 48-inch water transmission main is being installed along CTH R south of STH 147. The trench is dug to the appropriate depth and then gravel is added to the bottom. The gravel establishes the correct elevation of the pipe and serves as pipe bedding. The pipe is then set into place and additional gravel is compacted around the pipe to hold it in place. Once this is complete, topsoil is placed on top of the gravel and seeding will be added to return the area to its natural surroundings.
