At the bottom of the shaft is the tunnel that is being bored to cross under the Fox River. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) and the conveyor belt -- used to remove rock chipped away by the bore machine are deep inside the tunnel. Track is installed behind the TBM for hopper cars to use as they remove the rock chips. Lights installed along the tunnel wall aid the crews as they work.
